Fitting an Exact Fit harness

Six easy steps to an Exact Fit

1. Measure your back length, from the Iliac crest (the top of the hip bone) to the shoulder ridge. (See chart at bottom of page.)

2. Match your body shape with your back length.

3. Loosen the Exact Fit, top tension and shoulder strap adjuster buckles, then extend the shoulder straps up the frame as far as they will go. (See image below.)

4. Place pack on, put the hipbelt around the hips so the lumbar pad sits neatly in the lumbar region.

5. Lightly adjust the shoulder straps so the 'magic seam' is located 50 to 100 millimetres (approximately) from the shoulder ridge.

6. Adjust the Exact Fit buckle to remove any gap between the shoulder strap and the shoulder.
Be careful not to over adjust.

The Exact Fit harness - shaped for you

Body shapes vary dramatically: just compare a catwalk model to your mum. (Or perhaps, for the sake of family harmony, you’d better not…) However, this huge variation is not reflected in harness design: harnesses generally only come in a few sizes, modelled on the average. It’s a bit like shoes  only being available in small, medium and large fits, rather than the 20-odd sizes, different widths and lasts needed to fit everybody comfortably.

Exact Fit harness fits

To combat this problem, the One Planet Exact Fit harness (made up of the hipbelt and shoulder straps) is now available in up to eight fits, with four male and four female fits available in three back lengths. The women’s harnesses feature specially sculpted hipbelts and shoulder straps to better match the female form. So whether you’re shaped like Elle Macpherson or your mum, with a One Planet rucksack you’ll get a comfortable fit.

All One Planet dealers are trained in measuring and fitting our harness systems, enabling an Exact Fit. Even with eight fits available, our harnesses won’t fit every body. If you’re one of the special ones, custom fitting is available. We can mix-and-match harness components and add them to a current pack to give a perfect fit. It’s just another benefit of making our gear in Australia.

Daypack harness

Daypack harnessAll One Planet daypacks now have removable shoulder straps, allowing optional short or long straps to be fitted. The straps tuck neatly into a pocket on the back of the pack when not in use, and they can also be lengthened by up to 50 millimetres. This is a great innovation for the short and the tall: no more packs around your armpits or knees!

The compatible daypacks in our range are designed to be attached to our large packs as a front pocket or a front pack on the harness; great for quick access, increased capacity and security.

Mini harness

If you’re looking for a harness with the versatility to fit anyone from a child to a small giant while still being very comfortable under moderate loads, this is it! The frame is made of one aluminium bar, so with a simple adjustment the hipbelt and shoulder straps can slide up and down this bar without the restrictions imposed by other frames. Air mesh on the shoulder straps, hipbelt and lumbar area provides excellent ventilation and load transfer.

This harness is used on the Umbra, Vertex, Mini Freddy, Ronald and Traverse.

Limit of comfort: < 15 kilograms.

Midi harness

The Midi harness is used on mid size packs and is capable of carrying loads of up to 20 kilograms in comfort. Air mesh is used on contact areas to aid ventilation and ensure that the load transfer is secure and reliable. The shoulder straps and hipbelt are made from dual-density foams using the same composition as in the Exact Fit harness, while  the double-back buckles give the hipbelt a firm fit. This, combined with the well-padded lumbar pad, ensures the load  as easily transferred to the body. The Midi comes in three back lengths and harness fits, including a women’s version.

This harness is used on the Shadow, Tom Thumb and Tuk-Tuk.

Limit of comfort: < 20 kilograms.

Harness sizing

This is murky territory, full of confusion and jargon, with every brand, outdoor shop and expert using different terminology.

To keep it simple, here’s a guide to One Planet references.

Back length: the length of your back needs to be matched by a pack with a suitable frame length. We refer to our frames as short, medium and long.
Harness fits: the One Planet Exact Fit harness has eight harness fits (four male, four female), while the Midi harness has three (one is a women's fit). The hipbelts and shoulder straps of each are designed to match different body shapes and sizes.
Shoulder strap adjustment: adjusts the distance allowed for between the shoulders and the hips, within the confines of the frame’s length.

Harness covers

Harnesses can be a nightmare during transit – all those straps just waiting to get stuck, all that lovely foam ready to be damaged. There are harness covers on all One Planet travel and hybrid packs, designed to protect valuable harnesses from the rigours of travelling. The cover simply zips into position.

Shoulder straps, hipbelt and frames

We believe the harness is the most important part of a rucksack. Without a strong, comfortable harness, you may as well buy a suitcase. Accordingly, here at One Planet, we have spent more than two decades continuously improving our harness systems.

As a result, One Planet harnesses are famous for their comfort. In fact, One Planet's Exact Fit harness system is the only large rucksack harness to be endorsed by the Chiropractors' Association of Australia.

Shoulder straps
One Planet shoulder straps are made up of many different materials, chosen for their specific properties.

Foams of different densities are used, and covered with a durable, low-sweat contact fabric. These materials undergo a complex process of pre-stretching and lamination, giving them shape and durability. This composite sandwich is anatomically shaped to follow the body’s contours and finished with wrinkle-free edges.

Our foams are made in Australia specifically for our hot climate: the closed-cell foam used in One Planet rucksacks is a unique mix of EVA and EPDM and will not lose cell structure when exposed to even the hottest Australian sun. Although this may not be obvious when you purchase one of our rucksacks, after a couple of years of wear, the difference becomes apparent. One Planet harnesses just wear better!

Exact Fit harness

One Planet's Exact Fit is the only large rucksack harness to be endorsed by the Chiropractors' Association of Australia: a testament to its comfort and the low stress it places on the body. We have spent more than two decades continuously improving the Exact Fit harness system, making it the most comfortable, durable and convenient harness on the market.

The Exact Fit harness is now available in up to eight harness fits, with four male and four female fits available in three back lengths. Other brands have a maximum of four harness sizes: whose do you think will fit better? The Exact Fit system aims to give optimum comfort, allow freedom of movement, minimise stresses on the body (especially the spine), and to facilitate an exact fit without the pack leaving your back. So whether you’re shaped like Elle Macpherson or your mum, with a One Planet rucksack you’ll get a comfortable fit.
