Nissen Hut 3 person

The Nissen Hut is a very stable, versatile four-season tent, tough enough to cope with the colder, windier weather expected when bushwalking or ski touring year-round. It can fit three people across, has plenty of vestibule room and is as durable as they come.

This tent was remodelled from the One Planet Caddis: we widened the floor plan and made the three poles the same length, at the same time putting the poles in sleeves. (The poles are the same length as the Caddis's short pole for easy gear-pool compatibility.) The identical poles make this tent quick to pitch and easy to service, as well as allowing integral pitching. This means the inner and outer can be pitched at the same time, or it can be dismantled from the inside - great when it's raining. The Nissen Hut can also be used as a lightweight shelter by pitching the fly on its own.

The Nissen Hut's two big vestibules allow easy access, as well as plenty of storage room, while the fly design keeps the rain out even when the doors are open. The 75 denier polyester fly and heavy-duty bathtub floor keep the weather out and will take some abuse, as will the alloy poles and pegs. The simple, robust and foolproof key-pin pole attachment system was developed specifically for use on our Industrial range, while the #10 YKK coil zips have a width of ten millimetres, double that of most tents. Reflective guy-ropes with in-built storage reduce campsite accidents.

The Nissen Hut is designed and built with the same quality features as the other tents in the Industrial range. As with all tents in the range, spare parts are readily available thanks to the fixed basic design and specifications, which allows for interchangeable parts between new and old models.

The original Nissen Hut

The design of One Planet's Nissen Hut tent was inspired by the simple, reliable, strong and quick to assemble military hut.The original Nissen Hut was designed by Major Peter Norman Nissen in 1916 to cater for the increased demand for accommodation during World War I. The desirable features of the Nissen Hut which are also sought by modern adventurers are:

  • 1. Economic in its use of materials;
  • 2. Portable; and
  • 3. The structure's simple form allowed for ease of erection and removal.

The Nissen Hut could be packed in a standard Army wagon and erected by six men in four hours. The world record for erection was one hour, 27 minutes.
