Are One Planet packs waterproof?

A frequently asked question is, ‘Are One Planet Waterloc canvas rucksacks waterproof?’

Technically speaking, the answer is no. However, they are weatherproof; more so than any other nylon or canvas pack on the market. By weatherproof, we mean that in normal use, the contents of a Waterloc canvas rucksack will stay dry. However, if the pack is fully immersed or placed in a position other than upright, moisture can enter under the zip flaps and lid.

What makes One Planet rucksacks so much more waterproof than other packs?
One Planet rucksacks have three integrated features that are used to make them as weatherproof as possible: polyester/cotton fabrics, binding tape and thread.

Fabric
Waterloc® canvas
is a specially spun yarn which has a polyester core covered with a cotton wrap. It is tightly woven and impregnated with waterproofing and anti-rot agents. To put it simply, the polyester core gives the fabric strength, while the cotton expands when moist, filling any microscopic holes and providing superior waterproofing. (The cotton is also enhanced with waterproofing agents.)

Inside of packBinding
We now have a waterproof fabric! The next area where water can enter is through the seams.

Many of our packs our bound with canvas binding. During the binding process, the same waterproofing properties found in Waterloc canvas are applied to the construction of our packs, resulting in rucksacks with superior weatherproofing.

Thread and needles
Twin needles are used on all seams. The thread used is a large, polyester-core, spun-cotton wrapped thread, giving it strength and waterproofness. Small needles are also used, resulting in smaller holes and even better waterproofing.
